LESSON 7: Evaluation of Technology Learning

The standard student evaluation of learning must change. Not only the learners have changed but also the traditional world has metamorphosed into a digital world. We should also go digital in assessment, as it needs to conform, not with the literacy of the past century but the new literacy of the 21st century.

Teachers must adopt a new mindset both for instruction and evaluation. Evaluation must be geared to assessment of essential knowledge and skills so that learners can function effectively, productively and creatively in a new world.

MASS AMATEURIZATION
It is a term which implies a mass reach of student outputs. The personal and group creative activities in school should aim at bridging the gap between amateur creators of outputs to professional creators of future outcomes and products in the real world.

It can be simply put as the contribution from people on the internet who produce content such as blogs, videos, music and who have seen success out of this content, which would be seen as absurd from someone who went the traditional, educational route. Popular websites known for being a medium for mass amateurisation would be YouTube, Flickr, Wikipedia and WordPress.

The easy-going effort put into amateur content is allowing for people to get a better experience from being a part of these websites and learning a part of what it takes to be in an industry. People who become professionals from mass amateurization, from the amount of people that contribute and are a part of the audience allows for some people to get paid – much like the Yogscast on YouTube.
Relevance and engagement shall be carried both in the learning process, as well as in the evaluation schemes of new digital expressions in learning.
