Lesson 4: Bridging the Generation Gap

The older generation often feels a generation gap between them and the younger generation. This is apparent in simple things like the manner of dressing, socializing, more intimate relationships like friendship and marrying etc.  Even in education, traditional schooling has hardly changed even with the clear evidence of a digital world.

Gap is  an area between two things/persons and when things/persons have a gap there will be a difference among them that makes understanding hard for other people. Just like the education system, wherein the teachers from the past were used in using the traditional system and materials that makes it hard for them to cope up and use the new way ( digital way )
Here are some lists of Generation Gaps:
Dressing  - in the old generation , female usually wear a dress that would cover their arms and back because in those times they are very conservative but nowadays female like the kind of dress as what is shown at the right side below.

Socializing  - Before the people set up a date to meet, talk and bond with each other but nowadays with the help of technology they were communicating through social media .

Intimate relationships like friendship and marrying - In the older generation they used to court a girl with harana wherein the boy would have his friends with him to serenade the girl she likes while in the new generation they use social media, cellphones to connect with each other and as well as technology wherein they make amazing videos to propose for someone they like and love.

To bridge the generation gap, first, we need to understand the potentials of ICT.
The new network of instantaneous communication is global, overcoming borders between countries and continents.
Much of what elders believe may not be applicable anymore to the new generations, especially along matters of traditional value systems.

Other generation Gaps:
Flow of information - From tape recorders, books to laptops, tablets
Communication- From telephones, mails to social websites like skype, facebook
Methods of teaching -From using manila paper or green board and chalk in discussion to powerpoints and videos and audio materials.
